White oak is specified for exterior by most architects today. Cedar is a softer wood and the profiles are not as sharp. White oak is much harder and denser providing sharper features and long lasting prosperities. Under a microscope the cells are closed thus the wood is less porousWhite Oak was used in ancient galleons for the keels due to it's strength and ability to repel water. Due to the hardness it is more resistant to insect infestations Red Oak is another story and should be used only interior as the cells are more openThus White Oak is the wood of choice  for exterior applications

Your Green Solution:  Construction and Installation

Wood Products that are carved or turned are always made from multiple staves glued together. For exterior elements such as column bases, exterior grade glue is employed.  The wood staves are kiln dried hardwood lumber. All lumber is NHLA graded and dried to 6 to 8% moisture content.  Wood staves are glued as apposed to Solid wood blocks to increase the strength and durability of the product.

Wood should be treated prior to installation see

 PROLONGING THE LIFE OF WOOD

All wood is acid based and should never touch alkaline based concrete as the wood soaks up the lime moisture from the concrete continuously.  Simply place a plastic sheet (ie insulation plastic) between the wood element and the concrete substrate.  This is the same procedure that one takes when finishing a basement with the wall frame sill touching the concrete floor.
